Wisdom teeth assessment & removal
Wisdom teeth are third molar teeth that are the last teeth to develop in the mouth. Wisdom teeth can fit, but often there is not enough space in the back of the mouth for them and they can become impacted or stuck. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection and in some cases damage to the teeth in front of them and removal of the wisdom teeth can be necessary. If you are having problems with your wisdom teeth, we can assess your situation and recommend the best treatment for you. We need to take x-rays and usually will need an OPG or panoramic x-ray of your mouth to see the position and shape of the wisdom teeth and their roots. If appropriate, wisdom teeth can be removed in our practice under local anaesthetic, however we may need to refer you to see an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon specialist if you require a general anaesthetic or for more difficult teeth. After having your wisdom teeth removed, it is best to rest and take it easy for a few days. You will be given instructions on how to keep your mouth clean and comfortable whilst recovering from having your wisdom teeth removed.
